But is it properly named? Why is the proposed name any better
than rec.pets.cats.pedigrees? Okay, it's arguable whether creating
a new newsgroup in the alt.* hierarchy is any easier than creating
one in the Big8, but have you considered alt.cats.pedigrees?
People stumble on a newsgroup for the very first time usually as
a result of the use of a search engine. If they are looking to
obtain a cat, and it is an unusually rare cat, then geographical
location might be a fairly important factor to consider. Perhaps
a better place for that kind of a newsgroup would be:

    us.talk.cats+registries

or something similar to that. Remember, you are going to be
running into a fair number of people who dispute what constitutes
any particular breed. (If you do choose to work with the us.*
hierarchy, you will do well to know that the us.* hierarchy tends
to prefer 72 column screen widths, however, which is a fairly
convenient screen size for displaying tables of information.)

So long as I brought up the issue of geography, it suddenly
occurred to me to look at the de.* hierarchy. Sure enough,
there's a fairly healthy amount of traffic for de.rec.tiere.katzen,
but assuming that de.rec.tiere.katzen is the motherlode of cat
traffic in the de.* hierarchy, I don't see any splinter groups
stemming off of it relating to cats and cat issues. Maybe it's
a whole lot harder to create new newsgroups in the de.* hierarchy?
 (Yeah, who would have figured.)

 |I am a cat lover be it purebreds or moggies and I hate up setting
 |the people who will only get a cat from a shelter, they can't see
 |the attraction of pure breeds which I respect, used to think that
 |way myself, there are too many un wanted cats out there. On the
 |other hand why should I feel guilty for buying 2 Ragdolls, I love
 |them just as much as my little moggie.

There is nothing wrong with loving cats, but love - in and of itself-
is not a logical reason for choosing the name of a new newsgroup.
