I had an idea and checked the details of the messages. The normal font
for most messages I send and receive is given by charset=us=ascii.
Messages in the far from slightly different large heavy font are in
charset="iso-8859-2". It seems that if I reply to a message in the
latter charset the setting remains. I don't know if this a feature of
Internet Explorer but I guess you are right about iso-8859-2 since my
default font is supposed to be set as US-ascii in
 Tools...Options...Read...Fonts.
