A rangefinder is like a viewfinder, but unlike the simple optical
viewfinders
found on most point-and-shoot cameras, you can focus manually using it. The
"rangefinder" is a second viewfinder image superimposed in some manner over
the view, and when the two images line up, the subject is in focus. Since
the viewfinder isn't through-the-lens, it is bright, and the manual focus
system is extremely fast, easy, and accurate.
