 I'm concerned about the "unmoderated" part.  The biggest problem with 
 rec.photo.digital isn't that people are discussing both dSLRs and 
 digital point-and-shoots; it's that the group is infested by trolls, 
 flamers, and liars.  A significant fraction of the posts are junk, and 
 I'm concerned that splitting the group wouldn't help that. 
  
 Is there a reason we wouldn't be able to create rec.photo.digital.slr 
 as a moderated newsgroup?
