 Just to close this completely.  I did find a resolution for the stipple 
 as in the preferences I found the setting for "green paper" which when 
 unchecked allows Adwaita-dark to theme a consistent dark background for 
 each line with white text.  There are some other colors that are hard to 
 read, but they may be hard coded.  I'll ask about it on the CQRlog 
 forum.
