After more testing I found that most of the problem was due to my not logging and then back into the desktop. Secondly, I had the scaling set to 125% and that apparently threw cqrlog's UI off. Setting the scaling back to 100% and doing the logout/login dance again allowed the UI to be normal. I tested it using dark mode and Adwaita-dark for legacy apps in Tweaks and it seems to be handled better than on Bookworm as the stipple in the logbook alternates between light and dark backgrounds with white text.
