I think I've found the problem. It is not a wsjtx bug, but a problem in how
sound is handled when the screen goes to sleep. This problem affects other
programs which are recording audio such as fldigi too.
This post on Ask Ubuntu hints at a similar problem. I think the screen
going to sleep (and hdmi sound stopping although I'm not using hdmi sound)
is somehow changing how audio is being piped to the software.
The post suggests disabling 'module-switch-on-port-available' in /etc/pulse/
default.pa.

My system runs the Debian Trixie pipewire with pulseaudio modules. I have
disabled module-switch-on-port-available and restarted pipewire/pulseaudio
and it seems to have fixed the problem, it's been working with the screen
asleep.
I'll leave it running overnight to confirm.
