 other than optical discs (USB, SD card...) for convenience because they

 Smart indeed. Also the installer could warn the user that the 
 installation media will be disabled after installation, encouraging them 
 to use a network mirror. Daniel's reply inspire me another idea: some 
 users may wish to not use a network mirror during installation but have 
 it set up on the installed system.
