 Very sorry about the slow reply -- a combination of debconf and family 
 holidays being rather distracting.

 I think I'd looked for that, and failed to find where the file was being 
 used. 
  
 Without finding that, and confirming that any changes to the way it's 
 saved will still work, it seems a bit pointless to be putting effort 
 into saving it.
