Hi Jon.. I don't travel, very often. But I gather that the trick is to
travel mid week? Don't worry about the time of the flight. Book in advance.
Be flexible about dates etc. Some people will tell you there are only so
many 'cheap seats' on a certain flights that are expected to be lightly
booked? Depends what your schedule is.
I recently checked a transatlantic booking, Canada - UK. The fares ranged
from around $600 to over $2000. The most expensive showed up as from
Austrailan airlines, who don't even fly that route! Even though it was
obvious one would be on the same plane on the same time/date as the cheapest
fare! Enquiry was for a single senior traveller btw.
I also understand that the fares shown do not include all those extra
 security and 'airport' fees.
I really don't understand all the 'fancy', large and expensive buildings
that were constructed just before air travel took a downturn due to the
 economy, 9/11 etc.
An air terminal is just that; a place to go to get on/off a plane. Same as
 railway terminus or bus station.
Then one is packed into an aluminium cylinder for hours without room to
stretch one's legs with danger of a thrombosis! Thank goodness the jet
planes are faster now. I seem to recall going from Gander Newfoundland to
Prestwick Scotland in some eight-ten hours in a four engine piston plane
 1960!
One spends maybe a total of an hour or two in the air terminals, if all goes
well; but four, six or even eight hours sitting down in a plane. Seems like
the emphasis on accommodations, for "Travelling by Air", is all in the wrong
 place?
I wonder what happened to all those glossy promises of 'Pullman' type
aircraft where one could walk up to the bar 'on the upper deck' and even lie
 down if necessary.
Solution? Don't travel unless you have to!
 Good luck. Terry.
