You're absolutely right, Al. But you're ignoring the main point here.

Have highways improved? Yes, but only marginally. They were capable of high
 speeds back in the '60s.

Have cars improved? Drastically. They have more power, handle and brake
better, and have built-in safety features that improve your survivability in
a crash. You can drive faster while using less fuel than you used to, but
still more than if you drove at 100kph.

Have driving conditions improved? NO!!! Drivers on the whole are worse.
They're more ignorant, more inattentive and more distracted than they were.
Even worse? There's MORE OF THEM.

So, on the whole, we don't need higher speed limits. Higher speeds (90kph+)
use more fuel and are harder on your vehicle. They also keep drivers with no
clue (those that ONLY follow signs and nothing else) at safer speeds.
Driving at 100-110kph is not far off the flow of traffic on a highway, and
doesn't lose all that much time over the long-haul.

Our system is a good one. On the whole, if a police car observes you driving
competantly at high speed in a safe manner, they're usually pretty
forgiving. But I'd be scared if this was opened up to the general public.
OTOH, one thing I've always wondered why police officers often let off
people who answer "I don't know," when asked how fast they were driving.

If you don't know, YOU'RE NOT PAYING ENOUGH ATTENTION. Get off the road!
