If they don't use your mailing address, the bills won't come to you
but they will damage your credit rating. Hopefully you have caught it
early. Step number one is to report this to the police, TODAY. A
crime has been committed and you (not the store) must report it to
clear your name. Step number two (and the police will tell you this
as well when you talk to them) is to call the two major credit
reporting agencies and have them place a fraud alert on your credit
report. They will send you a copy of your current credit report so
you can see if any credit cards or loans have been applied for in your
name that you didn't know about. They will also (for 1 year) call you
at a verified phone number anytime someone applies for credit in your
name (regardless of the address/phone number they use when applying
for credit). The two agencies are as follows:
Equifax Canada
Report fraud: (800) 465-7166
Web: www.equifax.com/EFX_Canada
Trans Union Canada
Report fraud: (877) 525-3823
Web: www.tuc.ca/TUCorp/consumer/personalsolutions.htm
Having been through this process myself I can tell you it is not fun,
but it is important to act quickly. The fact that the man applying
for credit seems to be the same local man that stole your information
is actually a good sign. If your identity was stolen by a
professional outfit, it would be distributed over the internet on a
huge list and sold to criminals all over North America.
