The whole project is the basis of a major cap-badge war on the land
staff, at last report. No one is happy about it. The armour branch has
eyes on it because it is direct fire. The Gunners want to keep it,
since it has a range around 8 Km and more, shoots across boundaries
and rather farther than the understood area of influence of an armour
battle group commander, so it needs fire support co-ordination -- plus
it has been an artillery resource for about 17 years now.
The two senior arms are fighting for survival. What I believe is
required is a re-organisation of the land force along lines of two
combat arms: one technological and encompassing Gunners and Sappers
(and perhaps the Jimmies), and a second based on manoeuvre that rolls
together the armour and infantry.
