It's not uncommon to carry a little extra height if you are planning a non-standard circuit, or if the winds are unpredictable, then bleed it off once you've figured your covered. As for the hebs at getting 'spoiler lock', I've seen it as far back as 78' when C-GCLM went into the swamp at Mtvw, then again in 84' when C-FYLP landed short in Picton, clipping a tree with it's left wing.
