  Subj: "closures" of Canadian airspace?
 From: jjj@xxx.tv

I recently read an account of an American airline pilot on a flight from JFK
to Narita Japan being routed up over the North Pole instead of the more
usual route over Canada and past Anchorage. The reason given by the
dispatcher was "closure of some Canadian airspace." The pilot was told this
 usually meant a manpower shortage.

Does anyone know what would have caused this in the last few days and how
often this kind of thing happens? It seems significant to have flights
rerouted this way and I'm sure it costs fuel and time.

Thanks to anyone who can fill me in.
