The first time I watched it, I kept hoping against hope that it was real and the show had made the ballsy move to jazz things up by skipping sixteen years. I knew they wouldn't, but I hoped anyway. Ethan might have gotten away with it if he'd planned better. Riker was allegedly going to stay in contact with the kid. It would have been a nice touch if they'd occasionally shown some messages being exchanged. Since they didn't, the impression is that Riker promptly forgot the kid as soon as he could.
