XPost: alt.war.pow-mia From: jkaatz@nyc.rr.com Actually the President's father was a Naval hero and an Ace. Flew some 80 plus combat missions in the Pacific. The current President did serve in the National Guard and his unit was never called up during Vietnam. He served at the pleasure of the Governor of the State of Texas like all Guardsmen. Today, Guardsmen are finding themselves on the line serving in Iraq and elsewhere because their units have become "federalized". The President has taken action long overdue to make sure that all Reserve and National Guard units are up to date in terms of training and readiness and last years appointed LTG Blum, USA to make sure it happens. Knowing General Blum the task will be accomplished and it is a well known fact that many reserve and guard units across the nation are filled with combat veterans and thus are on equal footing with the active military. During the Vietnam war Bush was in a Guard unit that could have been called at any minute and whose mission during peace time played a key role in defense of the Southern Tier as were other units active, reserve and national guard where part of STRAC. The concern at the time was of course Cuba an ally of North Vietnam. It would be far to say that Bush put his time in and could have been called upon if DOD needed it to be deployed world wide. He served his nation in the National Guard and as a former combat veteran who flew missions in Vietnam I am proud that he is our President because he has more than just a basic understanding of the nature, application and projection of forces. ------------ ------------------------ ------------------- "Harlan Osier" |
