 In addition, etymologically speaking, the English words "hail", "heal" 
 and "whole" as well as their equivalents in German, all come from the 
 same proto-Germanic root that means "whole" or "heal". When you "hail" 
 someone, you are wishing them good health, which reminds me of the 
 word "salute", which is the equivalent concept in the Romance 
 languages ("salud" in Spanish, "salute" in Italian, etc).
